Documents Needed When a Parent Dies in India: The Complete Checklist

In the first days after a parent's death, the paperwork feels endless — and every institution asks for something slightly different. This checklist runs in the order events actually happen: what to collect immediately, what to obtain in the first two weeks, and then the claim documents for each institution, on the current RBI, IRDAI and SEBI rules.

Phase 1 — The First 48 Hours

Phase 2 — The First Two Weeks

Phase 3 — Claims, Institution by Institution

InstitutionCore documentsTimeline / note
Bank deposits Nominee: the bank's standard claim form + death certificate + nominee's ID — nothing else. No nominee: claim form + death certificate + ID + legal heir certificate (or a declaration by an independent person known to the family) + indemnity bond + NOC from non-claiming heirs Under the RBI deceased-customer directions, nominee claims need no legal documents at any amount. The simplified no-nominee route covers up to ₹15 lakh (₹5 lakh at co-operative banks) with no third-party surety. Settlement within 15 days; delay on deposits is compensated at Bank Rate + 4%.
Bank locker Standard claim form + death certificate + claimant ID; heir claims add heir certificate/declaration, indemnity and NOC as above Locker inventory must begin within 15 days; delay compensation is ₹5,000 per day.
Life insurance (LIC & others) Claim intimation + Claim Form A — LIC Forms 3783/3783A — with the death certificate, policy bond and discharge voucher (Form 3801). Early claims (policy less than ~3 years old) may additionally need Form B (3784, medical attendant), Form B1 (3816, hospital treatment), Form C (3785, identity & burial/cremation) and Form E (3787, employer's certificate). If the policy bond is lost, an indemnity on Form 3756 is used. Per IRDAI's master circular: claims not needing investigation settle within 15 days; investigated claims within 45 days; delayed payment earns penal interest at Bank Rate + 2%.
EPFO (PF, pension, EDLI) Online "Death claim filing by beneficiary" on the EPFO portal using the deceased's UAN, with the claimant's Aadhaar-based verification and OTP; the employer's exit marking and the death certificate support it Three payouts: PF balance, EPS widow/family pension, and EDLI insurance of ₹2.5 lakh minimum to ₹7 lakh maximum (with a ₹50,000 minimum for short service). Settlement is around 20 days.
Mutual funds First trace everything: search the deceased's holdings — including inactive folios and unclaimed amounts — through SEBI's MITRA platform via MFCentral. Transmission forms: T1 deletes a deceased joint holder's name, T2 transmits to the surviving joint holder, T3 transmits to the nominee or legal heir; T3 carries annexures for bank attestation, indemnity and affidavit Never redeem units in the deceased's name — transmission to the nominee/heir comes first.
Demat account Transmission form + death certificate + claimant's PAN and demat CML. CDSL: transmission form, with Annexure 7.2 for the death of a joint holder. NSDL: Annexure O, with OC (indemnity), OD (affidavit), OE (NOC) for heir claims SEBI's 2026 framework: Quick Transmission up to ₹30,000 (demat); simplified documentation up to ₹30 lakh per beneficial owner (₹10 lakh per company for physical shares); probate is not mandatory for securities; completion ordinarily within 21 days.
PPF & post office schemes PPF: claim on Form G with death certificate and passbook. Post office claims without a nominee: claim form + affidavit (Form 13) + disclaimer (Form 14) + indemnity (Form 15) PPF closes on death under Para 12 of the PPF Scheme, 2019 — the nominee cannot continue it; interest runs at the PPF rate till the end of the month before payment. Post office no-nominee claims without legal evidence are settled at discretion up to ₹5 lakh per account, filed six months after death. For SCSS, interest runs at the SCSS rate till the date of death and at the savings-account rate (4%) thereafter until closure.
Government insurance (PMJJBY / PMSBY) Claim through the bank account from which the premium was auto-debited, with the death certificate and nominee ID Premiums were ₹436/year (PMJJBY) and ₹20/year (PMSBY) — many accounts hold this cover without the family knowing. Check the deceased's bank statement for the debits.
Vehicle (RTO) Form 31 — application for transfer of ownership on the owner's death — with death certificate, heir proof, RC, insurance and PUC Apply within 90 days of the death, and inform the vehicle insurer promptly — the policy does not silently transfer on its own.
Income tax Register as the deceased's legal representative on the income-tax portal (with PAN of the deceased and the representative, death certificate and heir proof) to file the final return and receive any refund The deceased's income up to the date of death is assessed in the representative's hands for the estate.

Phase 4 — Mistakes That Cost Families Money

The Master Document Set to Keep Ready

Keep one physical folder and one scanned set. Every claim in Phase 3 is some combination of the documents above — families who assemble this set once, in Phase 2, finish months ahead of families who collect documents institution by institution.
